My friend Jean, who has stage 4 metastatic pancreatic cancer, gave me a major scare last week, on Friday. I want to do a post about it (that may or may not happen due to limited time) but the gist is, she called me and wasn't feeling well. When I got to her place, she was so weak and skinny, she was SHAKING, very cold and had a hard time breathing. I literally had to carry to the room where we have the Bemer mat, and I gave her 2 sessions, plus fresh Kangen water. Also, when I first saw her, I gave her about 2 tbsp of hypochlorous acid, in the event she was having some kind of reaction from a bacterial infection.
By that evening, she was more energetic and cheerful than she has been in a long time. I wish I had her on video, how cheerful and upbeat she sounded, when I talked to her around midnight that evening (I'd gone home to get some things to allow me to spend the night at her house, but when I talked to her on the phone she was so cheerful and upbeat, she said I didn't need to come back that evening). I am not a particularly religious person, but kept thanking God and the Universe over and over again. I was soo scared I was going to lose her, that day. That bout of illness seemed to come out of nowhere, and the reality of the fact that Jean really does have a life-threatening illness that kills the majority of people who get it, really slapped me upside the head that day.
From Cancer.org:
In general, people who can be treated with surgery tend to live longer than those not treated with surgery. The 5-year survival rate for people with stage IA pancreatic cancer is about 14%. For stage IB cancer, the 5-year survival rate is about 12%. For stage IIA pancreatic cancer, the 5-year survival rate is about 7%.
Needless to say, I don't ever want her to go through a scary incident like that again. We realized it was mostly caused by a lack of food. She hadn't eaten enough the day before, so I think she was experiencing hypoglycemia. I know that personally, when I don't eat enough, I can get shaky, and what Jean was experiencing seemed to be like what I get, times five.
OK, I just googled it, and it sounds like that was most likely hypoglycemia.
From this page:
An insulinoma is a small tumor in the pancreas that produces an excess amount of insulin. In most cases, the tumor isn't cancerous. ... When an insulinoma forms in your pancreas, however, it will continue to produce insulin, even when your blood sugar is too low. This can lead to severe hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar.
So, now we have the question... how do we make sure she is getting enough food, on schedule, on a regular basis? There's a type of chinese rice soup (porridge) she loves to eat, called chook, or congee (with the onions removed since they bother her now that she has an ostomy bag). But this means she has to heat it up on the stove, every time she is hungry. Unlike me, she cannot eat food when it's cold. I guess most people don't like cold food, and it's not like I enjoy cold food, but...I kind of got in the habit of eating it (without it bothering me) from my Dad. Maybe it boils down to laziness, haha. I don't even want to take the time to warm stuff up in the microwave. Jean is pretty adamant about wanting to be independent, and cook for herself. But I can see that she can use some help. She burned something on the stove today, so I am thinking of ordering some kind of crockpot for her. Microwaved food is NOT ALLOWED on the Hoxsey diet, because it changes the molecular structure of the food.
So, I've been looking at some different crock pots and warming options for her.
Note: for whatever reason, I found this one last, of all the options below. It's less than $12 right now, is available via prime, and has decent reviews. Think we may start with this one, but I will keep the others posted just in case.
